The Japanese Popstars are riding a wave of great live gigs, major festival bookings, and media praise off the back of their recent single, EP1. In their debut album, We Just Are, they have a collection of 12 tracks that will really take them places!
Native to Northern Ireland (any fetishists expecting cute Japanese girls can leave now), and consisting of Declan McLaughlin, Gary Curran, and Gareth Donoghue, The Japanese Popstars are signed to bespoke indie label, Gung-Ho Recordings (Gus Gus, Zoo Brazil) in the UK, and Beatink in Japan (home of Underworld, Aphex Twin, Cinematic Orchestra).
The Japanese Popstars’ only parallel with rock music is that they’d built up a sizeable live following before releasing their first major single – some might even say cultish, judging by the amount of clips on Youtube. Their gigs are typically raucous affairs, with an energy that crackles with each beat, chord, and keyboard stab!
However, let’s get one thing straight about the music – The Japanese Popstars aren’t indie rave, or any other sub-sub-sub genre, theirs is big room, cool as fuck electronic music built for festivals and stadiums. They’re not dance kids aping indie kids, nor are they indie kids dropping synths and calling themselves ‘ravers’.
We Just are is a glorious debut. Tracks including ‘Delboys Revenge’, ‘Sample Whore’, ‘Face Melter’, and new single ‘Rise of Ulysses’, give some basis to reviews citing them as “the British Justic/Digitalism”, but listening to the likes of ‘B.C.T.T’, ‘Dr Frenchy Bernard’, ‘Anthepic: We Have Taken Over’, and ‘The Smile’, the realisation dawns that this trio are heading for the territory once held by Orbital, Chemical Brothers, and Underworld. The Japanese Popstars – back to the future dance music for today, tomorrow, and forever, and it’s coming to a field near your very soon!

Se cuenta que corrían los primeros días del año 2006 cuando, poco después de recopilar buena parte de los mantras sintéticos creados en colaboración con Delia Gonzalez en el melancólico y planeador “Days of Mars” (DFA, 05), el peludo Gavin Russom se decidió a poner en marcha un nuevo proyecto inspirado en los sonidos disco europeos, en la electrónica de baile más ácida y cósmica, y en los ritmos repetitivos. Había nacido Black Meteoric Star, proyecto que venía a dar respuesta a su creciente interés por la música de baile y la cultura de club, y que Russom entendía como vehículo para experimentar, siempre en directo, con las relaciones entre pitch y tempo rítmico a partir de un número limitado de dispositivos. Por aquellos tiempos, Russom cambio el estrés neoyorquino por la calma y la vida barata en Berlín, se construyó un par de nuevos sintetizadores analógicos por el camino, y con ellos, y con el viejo acid house de DJ Pierre y Adonis resonando en su cabeza como máxima inspiración, se dispuso a crear una nueva colección de música intensamente repetitiva, progresiva, claustrofóbica, hipnótica y ácida.

Quien quiera empezar a familiarizarse con el universo ácido de Black Meteoric Star, sólo tiene que pegar el oído al set (te lo puedes bajar de aquí) que Russom realizaba para Beats On Space. Los primeros 30 minutos de show, Russom los gasta en interpretar en directo los dos tracks -“Domination” y “Anthem”- que formarán parte del segundo de los maxis de Black Meteoric Star. El resto es una sesión en la que podes escuchar temas de Twink, Gemmy, Palms o Archie Shepp. Eclecticismo al poder.

Made in Belgica este dúo electrónico. Jeroen Jonckheere Y Simon Van Beneden tal sus nombres son los responsables de Dead Disco Drivers. Jóvenes jóvenes jóvenes !
Se conocieron en la escuela y comenzaron sus almas a necesitar modificar algo de sus vidas juntos, encontraron asi la manera de construir y descontruir la música ( Según el ideal filosofo-musical que cada uno tenga) en forma de electrónica. Y el resultado final es excelente, no se si porque tienen la suerte de tener acceso a cualquier equipo necesario para hacerlo o porque realmente son ingenieros de las bandejas.
La cuestión igual es que estos chicos fanáticos de los Daft Punk por sobre todo, además de Vitalic, Boys Noize, Justice, Surkin, Crookers, Bloody Beetroots, Brodinski, Shameboy, The Subs, Soulwax y Goose y de su respeto al la formación cuasi perfecta de MSTRKRFT, su atracción fatal se inclina a Carmen Electra. Quizás se inspiren en ella para realizar las pistas.. Y hablábamos con Alejo sobre Rodman que era un loco (ex pareja de Electra) que jugaba un basquetbol del carajo y los DDD a lo mejor sean un par de locos enmascarados haciendo eso jugando en la electrónica y logrando un sonido del carajo !!
